How may I help?

Consultation, the first step:

When you contact me for the first time, we will have a consultation. A consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, to learn about how I practice, to hear my accent in English or my accent in Spanish (or even how do we understand each other’s Spanglish). No matter the language we choose to communicate with each other, in a few meetings we will get a good idea of how you want to change your story, your way of thinking, your approach to relationships...

Some of the questions my clients have when they meet me are: What needs to change to feel unstuck? How to shift focus to connect or reconnect with others, to find motivation, to explore new paths? What will it take to understand repeated conflict, fights, sadness? How long will therapy take? How much does it cost?

A consultation with me is a conversation with no agenda other than seeing if we, together, can open a door just so as the first step into a new journey, a new story for your life. It’s a confidential dialogue to discuss anything you want. No idea, thought, feeling, or concern is off-limits.

The goal of the consultation is to know:

- If therapy is the logical next step and what is therapy

- If I am a good fit as your therapist or counselor or what is the type of therapy that matches your needs

- What are the main questions to organize your journey (work, school, relationships, dating, parenting, lifestyle, sexuality, family issues, medical diagnosis, pregnancy)

- If you need a referral to another therapist or coach (I regularly make referrals to colleagues within my professional network in several areas of expertise, specialties, cultural backgrounds, and identities.)

Psychotherapy, Counseling, Talk-therapy:

I offer a confidential, non-judgmental, and flexible space to talk about your worries, to unburden, and to create new options. No subject is off-limits. Together with my patients and clients, we work on new stories to get closer to their true selves, understand their relationships, and update their purposes.

Therapy, as I understand it, is creating a space where we intentionally discuss thoughts, actions, fantasies to understand your mind, or your “collective mind,” if you are in relationship therapy. The difference between the modalities is in frequency (for example once a week, 3 times a week); duration (for example, open-ended, long term, brief psychotherapy); the number of people in the room (for example, individual therapy, relationship therapy, group therapy); or focus of attention (relationships, pre-marital, separation process, sexuality, diagnosis, LGBTQ, parenting, grief… and many more).

* Teletherapy: all sessions are done remotely (by phone or secure video apps)

My approach

To describe my approach (or my philosophy of care) I invite you to think on landscapes of sounds, colors, and words. Some of my clients tend to work at their best with visual imagery, others prefer to talk and discuss ideas, yet others like to use metaphors and stories to understand their experiences.

This is how I see our minds at work: flowing sounds, colors, and words in different layers, with diverse intensity and clarity, in and out of focus…

These images evoke what I see is the journey into deeper self-knowledge and greater meaningful connection with the world around us… gently directing our gaze towards the creativity, the pain, and the joy of playfulness woven into our passions, conflicts, and strengths.

There are many paths to healing and finding new purpose, new stories, there are options unique to you that honor who you are.

The Journey: your new story

In my practice, I extend an invitation to create, together, a safe space of common language. Imagine having a place where any topic is within reach.

The stories you bring will guide us to imagine and sense what was, what could be, and the possibilities of what is. We talk, we seek to understand, and we pay emotional attention to the impact of your body, your mind, and your relationships in your experiences at work, with your family, in your intimate relationships, with your sexuality, your finances, your career…

I believe we have many identities/masks/costumes/layers (there are many synonyms) to interact with the world and the people in it. When we feel “out of sync” maybe we neglected one of those parts of ourselves for too long, or maybe because we are in a transition that calls upon forgotten selves…

The birth of a baby, the death of a loved one, the end of a romantic relationship, an endless stream of online dates that leave you empty, college life, choosing a career path… many moments could highlight our need for a space to reflect and invent new paths.

I believe our lives cannot be understood without making sense of our relationships with people, social media, pop culture, race, ethnic origin, the books we read, the movies and entertainment we seek, our sexual fantasies, our physical bodies… Not all journeys will dig into all of our “parts.” That is not necessary to heal. We decide together what is best and what is possible for your own journey, and that will be unique to each of my clients and patients.

Are you ready to start?

The Practical Stuff

The frequency of the sessions, the duration of our encounters, and the length of the process are not the same for every person or for all relationships.

I will work openly with you to determine what is “good enough”: between ideals that seem hard to achieve (the “shoulds”), and the limited choices that seem pointless and rather shallow (the “cannots”), there is a space where we can decide together what frequency, duration, and length is “good enough” for you and me.
